What is IELTS? A complete Introduction

Introduced in 1989, IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is an English language proficiency test internationally recognized for testing English language ability in four categories:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

Students are graded on a score of 1-9 for each part of the test based on their potential to read, listen, write and speak in English.

IELTS is specifically designed for non-native speakers who are looking to study, work or migrate to an English-speaking country like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.

IELTS testing methods focus on the candidate’s practical ability to use English in real-life situations. There are two types of IELTS tests to choose based on what you want to do. IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training.

  • Academic IELTS test measures whether your English language proficiency level is preferred for an academic environment. It evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training or studying and reflects academic language aspects. It is for international students who wish to study at a UK university or join higher education institutes.

  • General IELTS measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. It focuses on English survival skills for both social and workplace situations. It is ideal for those planning to move to countries where English is a native language, like Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Once scored, your IELTS grade is valid for two years.
